On November 22, 2024, President Donald Trump announced his selection of Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor. A former Oregon state representative for District 5, Chavez-DeRemer boasts a distinguished career in public service. She made history as the first Latina elected to the city council of Happy Valley, Oregon, and later served as the city’s mayor from 2010 to 2019. Known for her dedication to small businesses and job creation, she brings a fresh perspective to the role.
During her tenure as mayor, Chavez-DeRemer prioritized economic development and job growth while maintaining a balanced budget—a testament to her fiscal discipline. Her close collaboration with local businesses has provided her with valuable insight into their challenges and needs, a perspective that could greatly inform her approach as Secretary of Labor. Additionally, her background in healthcare administration may prove advantageous as she addresses issues like workplace safety and employee benefits.
However, her track record on labor policies has sparked debate. Chavez-DeRemer holds conflicting positions on key issues such as the PRO Act and the controversial ABC test for determining independent contractor status. These stances have raised questions about how she will navigate the complex priorities of her new role.
As she steps into this critical position, Lori Chavez-DeRemer faces the challenge of balancing her advocacy for business growth with the pressing needs of workers. Only time will tell how her leadership will shape the Department of Labor.
